The Production of Speech To produce different speech phonemes (sounds) the SSI 263A uses a model of the human vocal tract. Within the device this analog tract is modeled with five cascaded programmable low pass filter sections. The filter sections are programmed internally by a digital controller. Either a glottal (pitch) or a pseudo-random noise source is used to excite the vocal tract, depen- ding on whether a voiced or non-voiced phonema is selected. During speech production the phonemes will typically last between 25 and 100 mS.
